Remix controversy

After the news got out about Ubuntu’s netbook remix, the included propietory codecs and even possible cooperation with Microsoft, some people were questioning Ubuntu.

While most people thought this to be a good move from Canonical to help spread Linux, open-source zealots found it not-done.

Mark Shuttleworth (ubuntu’s founder and philanthropist) responded on the lists.ubuntu.com.

There is (again) absolutely no truth to the rumour that Canonical has
done a deal with Microsoft for access to codecs – either in return for
money, or for some other quid-pro-quo. – Mark Shuttleworth

He went on to say that they might work together with MS under transparent and reasonable conditions if the necessity arises.

I personally find it a good thing that newcomers to Ubuntu (linux) have codecs preinstalled by the OEM on their netbook.

That saves them the trouble of having to install it afterwards, because let’s face it, most of us do install them.

  1. Why is it that in the entire Blogoshere the only places I ever see GNU/Linux users condemn Free Software advocates as “zealots” is on pages written by Ubuntu users/fans?

Is there something about Ubuntu that turns ordinary GNU/Linux users into anti-Freedom bigots?

I support the free software foundation and their stance on the subject, but in todays world I can’t follow it, nor can most people.

I would love to only use open-source software, but in todays day and age you are severely limiting your options by doing so.

Ubuntu is “Linux for human beings” and users need things like flash, dvd playback, video and audio codecs.

I understand the point made by the Open Source advocates, but most people need those things to work, so a strictly open-source OS isn’t possible.

I agree with you there. The codecs thing can only be described as zealotry.

I support the GNU, FSF, and the rest of ’em. But keep things in line and usable, and don’t forget what computing is for.

  2. This piece of writing gives clear idea in favor of the new users
of blogging, that really how to do blogging.
