Once upon a time, PCLinuxOS was the biggest desktop distro. It came from nowhere straight to the top, beating Ubuntu and other big distros.

But as fast as it rose to the top, even faster was its decline.

The next release was no where near as popular as it’s predecessor. The distro seemed to have faded into the giant pool of small Linux distros.

Is PCLOS once again a serious contender for the desktop with the 2010 release?

Installation

PCLOS uses an installer called Draklive-Install.

Draklive is fast, polished and easy to use.

It took around 15 minutes to install in my virtual machine.

Draklive-Installer

After the image has been copied to your harddrive, you can choose which bootloader you want.

You can also change the boot order. Which is nice for people who dual-boot.

Upon first boot, Draklive will ask you to create a root password and a user account.

That was easy.

Standard Installation

The Grub theme, boot sequence, KDM theme and the desktop all looks nicely integrated with each other.

The distro uses KDE 4.4.1 as its DE.

PCLOS Standard Desktop

A pleasant surprise is that PCLOS has desktop icons. People migrating from Windows, OSX or Gnome will appreciate this, as will a lot of KDE users.

The default install offers a plethora of applications. Besides the usual stuff, it comes with a feed reader, blogging client, 3g software, download manager, desktop sharing application, SMB/CIFS share browser, new reader, contact manager, personal information manager, google gadgets, wallet management tool, encryption tool, personal finance manager, hex editor, alternative light-weight file manager, system cleaner, file cleaner, note taking software, alarm software, personal organizer, …

Because of all this software, navigation is a mess. PCLOS uses the old KDE3 style Application Launcher Menu, which doesn’t help. Had they opted to used the normal KDE4 launcher, this would be less of an issue.

Navigation is a mess

OpenOffice isn’t installed by default, but there is a link to download and install it from the repos in the “Office” menu.

Flash player is installed by default, as are popular audio and video codecs.

System Administration

Synaptic is the main graphical package manager, a bit strange since it’s an RPM based distro. Obviously, apt is also available.

I wanted to remove some software, but when I searched for Konqueror or Kcalc, Synaptic didn’t find them.

So I browsed all applications available (installed or not) and they weren’t in there either.

Software installation was smooth.

PCLOS has a Control Center to manage most of your system. It reminds me of Yast on OpenSUSE.

I honestly didn’t expect PCLOS to have this kind of system management tool. It’s a breeze to use and works great. A lot of distros should take notice of this (Ubuntu, looking at you).

Control Center Makes Life Easy

Conclusion

Pros:

It offers the latest and greatest software.

Flash and media codecs are installed by default.

Control Center makes it easy to manage your system.

Cons:

There is too much software installed by default, which makes the menu navigation more cluttered than it should be.

OpenOffice should be installed by default on this type of distro who aims at beginning Linux users.

Its package management is lacking. I didn’t test APT on the CLI, but Synaptic isn’t doing too good a job.

Do you agree or don’t you? Drop a line in the comments.

Elive is a Belgian, Debian based distro using the Enlightenment (E17) window manager.

If you want to install Elive 2.0 to your hard drive, you will need to donate money to its creator.

This fact was not mentioned on Elive’s homepage, so this came as a surprise to me when I wanted to install it.

You have to donate at least €15 before you get access to the module required to run the installer.

As a result, I can only review the live CD.

Elive 2.0

Live CD

Elive comes with a lot of software installed, which came as a bit of a surprise to me, since it’s often mentioned as a good light-weight distro.

The live CD comes with Abiword, Gnumeric, a video and audio editor. It has flash support, mp3 support it plays popular video formats.

The file browser (besides the horrible E17 one) is Thunar.

Besides that it has Skype, Amsn, Iceweasel (Firefox) and Xchat.

There is an application that adds SMB support to Thunar (to share files with Windows).

The live CD was tested using 750mb of ram memory and everything ran smoothly. E17 offers a good mixture between light-weight and eye-candy to its users.

Issues

A minor problem is that some of the software is a bit outdated. For instance Iceweasel uses version 3.0.6 and Thunar uses version 0.9.0, both pretty old versions.

There are some weird choices of pre-made directories and stuff in those directories. For instance, there is a “Desktop” directory which has a “Torrent” and “Xchat” folder. The same directories however also appear under “Downloads”. There is a directory in “Video” called “Elive”, but that contains a stream to a IBM Linux commercial, also there is a “cinerella_projects” directory, but Cinerella isn’t installed. In the “Music” directory there are streams to shoutcast radio stations. Pretty weird.

There is no application to change the keyboard layout. I don’t used QWERTY so I found it hard to use. I know you can change it using the terminal, but that really shouldn’t be necessary.

Thunar doesn’t offer me the option to mount the hard drives in my PC. So I have to manually mount them from the terminal. There are applications on the live CD that need hard drives (video editor, …) so this is a little issue for people who don’t know how to manually mount drives from the CLI.

Conclusion

I don’t find this distro worth the trouble. As a live CD it’s not bad, but it’s not great either.

I understand the developer wants some sort of income from his project, but I don’t see why I would pay him for his work when I can just install Debian Lenny and E17 and have the same thing for free.

Do you agree, or not? Drop a line in the comments.

Old posts will not be updated.

That being said, if people are interested in writing how-to’s or whatever, I will post them. Give me a shout out at “billgoldbergmania@gmail.com”.

The theme will also be changed since it doesn’t render correctly in Firefox 3.6.

The Zimbra Desktop is out of beta and has launched it’s first stable version on all major platforms.

Zimbra Desktop is an email client by Yahoo.

I’m not going to copy all the features it has, you can read those here.

It all seems pretty basic, but the web-mashups and the fact that you can use your Yahoo Mail with this is what caught my interest.

1. Installation

Oh boy.

I was under the impression Zimbra Desktop would be in the Ubuntu Partner Repository, but it seems that is only the case for Ubuntu 8.04.

No to worry, they offer an installer script on their website. It’s about 50mb large and takes up around 200mb after installation. The file can be found here.

Right-click the script and choose “properties”, in the “permissions” tab tag the “execute” box.

More advanced users can use the chmod command in their terminal instead.

Be aware that Zimbra Desktop uses Java, so make sure you have it installed.

Start the script (double-click, run in terminal) and a gui-installer will appear.

It’s very Windows like and everyone should be able to install it without further instructions.

I will ask you if you want a desktop shortcut and if it can launch itself after installation.

The first time I choose not to let it create a desktop shortcut and let it launch itself.

Nothing happened.

Let me check the menu. Oh it’s not there.

Launched it manually. Nothing happened.

I removed it and reinstalled, this time letting it create the desktop shortcut and launch itself after installation.

Again nothing happened.

I doubled clicked the desktop shortcut and there it was.

Again: Oh Boy.

I stopped the service and restarted it:

/home/username/zimbra/zdesktop/zdesktop stop

/home/username/zimbra/zdesktop/zdesktop start

Double-clicked the desktop icon again and this time it worked.

2. Setting up accounts

Zimbra Desktop has support for Yahoo Mail, Gmail (have to enable pop and imap support in gmail first), Windows Live Mail, Microsoft Exchage (imap), …

I have a Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo account.

Setting those up is as easy and selecting the provider and entering your email address.

This worked perfectly for Gmail but it didn’t for Hotmail and Yahoo.

Yes, you read that correctly. Yahoo’s email client gave an error message while trying to add my Yahoo account. The same was true for the Hotmail account (Windows Live Mail).

3. Usage and Interface

The interface looks horrible for a desktop application and is slow.

The application worked as it should with my gmail account.

The webmash-ups looked great on paper, but I really have no use for them.

There really isn’t much more to say about this piece of software.

4. Conclusion

Zimbra Desktop looked good on paper, but that’s it.

In reality it is a slow, buggy and ugly desktop application.

It has potential, but it isn’t here yet.

If you want a desktop email client that syncs with your Yahoo Mail account, this is your only option. If you get it working.

I will not be using this email client and advise that people stear clear of it.

Ubuntu 9.04 is turning out to be a great upgrade from Ibex (unless you have Intel graphics) but there are some minor annoyances that need tweaking imho.

1. Enable “ctrl+alt+backspace ” to reset X.

For some reason that great, well know shortcut has been disabled. Apparently people were pressing it by accident. I know …

It’s been replaced by “alt gr + SysRq (print screen) + K”, which is a bad short cut in my eyes.

Open up xorg.conf and add this to the bottom of the document:

Section “ServerFlags”

Option “DontZap” “false”

EndSection

Opening xorg.conf -> gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

xorg.conf open in Gedit

This will only take affect on the next login or restart of the machine.

2. Restore normal Update Manager behaviour.

You no longer have an icon telling you there are update available in the notification area of the top panel.

Update manager will now just pop up once a week to inform you about the updates.

Again a bad idea in my opinion, but the boys and girls over at Canonical know best I guess.

Press “alt+f2″ to summon the “run application” and enter:

gconf-editor

Navigate to “apps -> update-notifier” and untag the box next to “auto-launch”.

Normal Update Manager behaviour!

3. Fix the tooltip annoyance

When using the Workspace Switcher applet, tooltips might stay up until you press them.

It’s easy to fix using gconf-editor.

Press “alt+f2″ to summon the “run application” and enter:

gconf-editor

Navigate to “apps -> panel -> global” and untag the box next to “tooltips_enabled”.

This should have been done by default, Canonical.

4. Low sound volume

Loads of people on ubuntuforums.org have complained about their sound not being maxed out.

Well this has been the case in every Ubuntu release (for me at least).

In a terminal enter:

alsamixer

and start maxing things out.

Ncurses interfaces, love 'em or hate 'em.

But what if you need to save a video from a more obscure source or don’t want to bother with those tools/sites?

It’s pretty easy.

Let the video load. When it’s done, open your file manager and browse to /tmp.

You’ll find a video sitting there just waiting to be copied to another location.

Like many people I have multiple email addresses.

I had a hotmail one and a gmail one, both equally important.

Recently hotmail offers free pop access so I thought the time was right to start using a email client.

In this how-to I’ll provide step by step instructions on setting up your gmail and hotmail account in Evolution.

Evolution is the standard email client in Ubuntu and can be found in “Applications -> Internet -> Evolution Mail”.

1. Hotmail

When you open up Evolution for the first time you’ll see a setup assistant.

Forward until you get to the “Identity” screen.

Enter you full name and your full email address. If you want your hotmail account to be your default address leave the tag next to the box.

Press forward until you reach the “Receiving Email” windows.

Pick “pop” from the drop down list.

Fill in the following information:

Server: pop3.live.com
Username: xxx@hotmail.com (use full email address)
Security: SSL

Leave the rest as it is.

In the next screen you’ll have to make some decisions for yourself.

Now we hit the “Sending Email” screen. Enter this:

Server: smtp.live.com
Encryption: SSL
Username: xxx@hotmail.com (enter full email address)

Leave the rest be.

The next few screens explain themselves and should be obvious.

Press apply when you are finished.

In Evolution Mail press the “send/receive” button.

Evolution will now start downloading your emails.

2. Gmail

First go to gmail using your internet browser and log in.

On the top of the page there should be a “preferences” link (next to your email address).

Now click on the “tab” where you see “imap” and “pop” mentioned.

Make sure pop and imap is enabled.

If that is done, open evolution.

Because we already have an account the Wizard won’t appear.

Go to “Edit -> Preferences” and in the window that pops up you will be able to add a new account.

This will bring up the Wizard.

In the “Identity” window, enter your name and your email address.

Now you’ll hit the “Receiving Email” window again.

Once again choose “pop” from the dropdown list.

The server is: “pop.gmail.com” and your username should be your full gmail address.

The security should be SSL.

Choose as you see fit in the next window.

In the following window, called “Sending Email” enter the following:

Server type: SMTP
Server: smtp.gmail.com
Security: SSL
Username: xxx@gmail.com (enter full email address)

Leave the rest be.

The next window is too obvious to guide you trough it.

When finished press apply and then in Evolution press “send/receive”.

That’s it.

Leave the program running and you will get notifications when you receive a new email.

I’ve been a Gnome user ever I started using Linux a little over 2 years ago.

Sure I’ve flirted with other WM and DE but Gnome always stayed my favorite.

When KDE 4 came out it looked promising but I was not impressed with it at all.

It was slow, had lots of bugs and not much going for it really besides it’s looks.

KDE 4.1 was more of the same, still not impressed.

That all changed when version 4.2 came out a little while ago.

I now use KDE 4.2 and haven’t looked back.

Why? Keep reading.

See end of article for installation instructions.

Kwin

Kwin is the (compositing) Window Manager and is too slow for me.

I’ve always like Compiz Fusion for it good balance between performance and eyecandy, Kwin is lacking that balance.

So I dumped it in favor of Compiz Fusion.

Dumping Kwin for Compiz Fusion also means you loose the plasmoids.

I don’t care about those, I prefer my Desktop clean and tidy.

A KDE 4.2 destkop running Compiz Fusion

Looks

KDE 4.2 looks great and that is the biggest reason I switched to it.

I just got tired of the same old Gnome looks.

Sure you can theme it, but you are still stuck with those 1999ish looking panels.

The theme and icon themes looks pretty damn good, they just look more refined than any Gtk theme or icon theme I’ve seen.

As you can see from the screenshot posted earlier, the big ass bottom panel is gone in favor of a Vista-ish panel.

And just as with Vista, I like it.

Dolphin

Having used Nautilus, PCmanFM and Thunar this is a pleasant surprise.

It looks really great.

It thought Explorer.exe in Windows 7 looked great, this surpasses it.

It might not have ftp and ssh support (at least it didn’t in previous kde versions) but it does have more “views” and a great preview feature (with comments you can add yourself).

It can’t compare speed wise to PCmanFm or Thunar but it’s on par with Nautilus.

And lets face it, you won’t run this DE on a 7 year old machine, my PC can handle it just fine.

Dolphin, the KDE file manager.

Kickoff Launcher

I know there was a buzz about this one when KDE 4 came out (mostly bad) and I don’t really know if it has changed a lot, but it seems to get the job done.

There is a search field built into it that makes it very easy to quickly find an application.

If you want to go through the menus it is a bit slower than doing the same on Gnome but the favorites and search features make up for it.

Most people only use a select number of applications on a regular basis so they might actually be able to get to their apps faster using this menu instead of the Gnome one.

The KDE 4.2 Kickoff Launcher showing the Favorite tab.

The KDE 4.2 Kickoff launcher showing the search feature.

Amarok 2

Amarok and KDE is like gin and tonic, they just go well together.

The first Amarok version was consider the best audio player/manager on Linux.

The second version is surely different but I actually like it better.

It’s focus is on playlists and that’s a new approach.

I’m not going to do a full review on it, just check it out and see if you like it.

Amarok 2 running on KDE 4.2

GTK-QT

There are loads of great GTK apps out there and if you like to run them using another WM or DE then Gnome, you might find that they look horrible.

In comes Gtk-Qt.

It makes your Gtk apps blend into KDE.

It’s not perfect but it helps.

After installation (and restarting X) there will be a mentioning of it in the Appearance application (System Settings -> Appearance).

Making your GTK applications blend in in KDE using Gtk-Qt

On many tech blogs/sites I have read a lot about Windows 7 and a lot of articles say the new OS from Redmond could be claim back some Linux converts.

I have been forcing myself to use Windows 7 now for a few weeks. I started with the prebeta and now I’m on the beta.

I think it’s a good idea to first sum up some of the strong points about Windows 7.

It installs twice as fast as Vista.

It’s blazing fast when compared to Vista.

It looks better (superbar and more eyecandy).

Due to the search boxes everywhere, it’s easy to find stuff.

UAC has been improved.

That question is: “Will this be enough to lure Linux users back to Windows?“

I am sure that some Ubuntu users will switch back.

A lot of Ubuntu users switched to Ubuntu because they had problems with Vista.

The rest of us, who use Linux because of the level of control, the security, the flexibility won’t change back, not in a thousand years.

So while some users might switch back, Windows 7 will certainly not be the death of Linux.

A lot has happened since Firefox 3 launched and other browsers were catching up to the all powerfull open source browser, but it’s back.

Firefox 3.1 beta 2 is out and boy it’s fast.

It comes with the new Tracemonkey javascript engine and Gecko 1.9.1.

Tab switching is faster and it has “private browsing”, read more about the new features here.

Download the beta here.

If you need help installing, keep reading.

Download the file to you /home folder. Don’t put it on your desktop.

Right-click the file to extract it.

Once installed, simply double-click the file called “firefox” and it will open.

If you want to add this to you Application menu, go to system -> preferences -> main menu.

In the Internet section, press “Add” on the right side of the tool.

As command enter the path to the file:

/home/yourusername/firefox/firefox

It would be wise to call it firefox 3.1 or something, so you won’t confuse it with firefox 3.0.5 already installed on your system.

In this short “how-to” I’ll explain on how to back up your home folder (or anything else you want) every week.

I’ll be using rsync and bash script and a cron job.

The whole thing will take 2 minutes to set up.

Before you start reading, keep in mind that when you see “–xxx” in a command, it is actually “- -xxx” but without a space in between them.

Create the rsync

I’ll be using this command

sudo rsync -av –progress –delete /home /media/Disk

This command will back your you home folder and copy it to a external hdd.

You external hdd could have another name.

Navigate to /media and find out how yours is called.

Note: if you to exclude a folder from the backup, use –exclude “/home/username/folder” .

Read the rsync man page for more options.

Creating the script.

Create a new file and simply type “#!/bin/bash” followed with the rsync command.

Mine looks like this:

#!/bin/bash

#Back up my home folder to my external hdd
sudo rsync -av –progress –delete /home /media/Disk

I’ll call my script “backup.sh”.

Right-click the script, click properties and in the permission tab select “allow executing …”.

Or you can do the same from the terminal using this command

sudo chmod +x /home/username/directory/backup.sh

You could now just launch the script and it will back up your system (double click the script and choose “run in terminal”).

But you can just automate it and you’ll never have to think about back ups again.

Creating the cron job

Because the script will prompt you for your password, we’ll need to be creative here.

What’s the point of automated backups when you’ll need to enter you password everytime before it starts?

The easy solution is just moving the script to /root.

Press “alt+f2″ and enter gksudo nautilus.

Now you can easily move the file to /root.

Now for the cron job part.

In a terminal enter

sudo crontab -e

A nano text document will open.

Use your arrow keys to navigate to the bottom of the document and type in this:

0 12 * * 7 /root/backup.sh

This job will launch the backup script every sunday at noon.

The first number here, the 0 is meant for the number of minutes after the hour.

The second number here, 12 is the hour of the day. For American users, this uses the 24 hour system.

The third number, here a *, is the day of the month.

The fourth number, here a * is the month of the year.

The fifth number is the day of the week. The 0 or 7 being Sunday.

After the fifth number you insert the command.

Now press “ctrl + x” and press “y” to save the file.

Done.

Everyone knows Compiz Fusion, but what if you don’t want to run it on your system?

Instead of just not using it, you could use Metacity compositing.

Metacity’s compositing option will draw shadows around your windows, will give you a more visually “alt – tab” switcher.

It should allow you to use apps that require compositing like the AWN dock.

The biggest reason I use it is because the standard Metacity effect when you minimize or maximize an app is just horrible.

Metacity’s compisiting option will fix that annoyance.

Turn it on

Press “alt + f2″ to open the run application dialog and enter

gconf-editor

Navigate to “apps -> metacity -> general”.

Tag the little box next to “compositing_manager”.

Metacity will restart and you will be using it seconds after tagging the box.

I have been bored with Ubuntu since Hardy.

A lot of people were claiming Arch Linux was THE distro for people wanting more control and speed.

I had nothing to do yesterday so I downloaded the iso (around 300mb) and installed it.

If you are new to Linux and are using Ubuntu, stay with it.

Arch linux isn’t user friendly in the meaning of ease of setting up and tweaking.

It is a user friendly distro in the way you can control it.

If you want to give it a try, read the beginners guide first on the Arch Wiki.

Seriously, read it before you try to install.

I know most of the readers here are Ubuntu users so I’ll keep writing how-to’s for Ubuntu.

I do not plan on writing stuff for Arch.

After a long period of beta versions, Songbird 1.0 is out.

The big question is: is it any good?

Let’s find out.

Installation

Right-click the downloaded .tar.gz file after you downloaded it from http://getsongbird.com and extract it.

Double-click the file called “songbird” in the newly created folder.

The first time you’ll have to agree to some EULA, it will ask you if you want to scan your pc for music files. It will also suggest some recommended add-ons and ask if it can collect info from you.

I suggest you move that folder to your home directory and add a launcher for it in your “application -> sound and video” menu.

Go to “system -> preferences -> main menu”, and create a new entry in the sound and video menu. In the command box simply link to the songbird file. If you have the songbird folder in your home directory that would be /home/yourusernamehere/Songbird/songbird.

Looks

Oh, I don’t think so Mozilla.

It looks bad, it won’t work with your compiz fusion effects (wobbly windows, you can’t move it to another workspace using the wall or cube plugin, …).

It have never used Itunes, but seen pics of it and it looks exactly like it, which is a bad thing.

The thing looks totally out of place on your Gnome desktop.

This isn't Windows Mozilla, Gnome users like their apps to integrate with the DE.

Usability

Your entire music collection should have been added during first boot, and pretty fast too.

The default view of the files in the Library is the same as in some other players. I’m not a big fan of it.

But you can easily change it to the file view. That’s good.

The search feature works well and is useful to quickly find a song, but I don’t know any modern audio player (well, I do know some :p) that doesn’t have this feature.

On the left plane it has some features that only a handful of users will use.

Really, the hype machine looks nice but I’ll never use it again.

There is an option to search for concerts in the left plane, but unless you live in the States, the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada you have no use for it.

Songbird can browse shoutcast radio streams, which is always a good thing for a media player.

It goes without saying you can make playlists with it. But again, that’s a given for any modern full-featured media player.

Songbird has one big feature I like that other players lack, add-ons. I love them in Firefox and they are OK in Songbird.

I installed and tried out the MediaFlow add-on. It is similar to Apple’s CoverFlow.

After installing it, you’ll have to change the file view to MediaFlow for it to actually kick in.

Songbird using the MediaFlow add-on.

This add-on is all about eye-candy because it isn’t useful at all to browse your music collection. If you don’t care to add cover art to your music files, then it actually looks very bad.

I should probably mention that you can download skins (called feathers) for Songbird, that it comes with a metadata editor, has last.fm and ipod support.

Conclusion

Songbird is a good audio player, no doubt about it.

I only tested it for about an hour, but it seemed stable to me.

But I will never use it on my Ubuntu pc’s.

I’m a Compiz Fusion guy and like my apps to integrate with the DE (Desktop Enviroment, aka Gnome).

I would give it a 7/10 but because it doesn’t play nice with Compiz Fusion and Gnome I have to fail it and give it a 4/10.

Do you have anything to add? You don’t or do agree? Drop a line in the comments.

I have had some computer issues that kept me from posting the last week or so.

I needed to move my monitor and when I plugged it back in it died on me.

My laptop is in the shop (again) and I didn’t feel like posting here using my Asus Eeepc (to small for writing posts).

Either way, I’ll be posting again tomorrow.

If you have any subject (linux related) you would like to see me make a post about, post a comment here and I’ll might just do it.

(for people interested on seeing my new computer setup, keep reading)

Click the picture for the huge original size.

In case anyone is wondering, that is a 22″ inch widescreen moniter. It’s a Samsung SyncMaster T220.

I paid €245 ($311) for it.

After using a non widescreen 19″ inch tft monitor for years, it’s HUGE for me.
